Oh Come, Little Children

Earlier this week Lucy had her school Christmas program at a nearby church.  This was our first time with something like this, so we got there at 6:00 (for the 6:30 show), to find the parking lot packed and almost no seats left!  But we were able to find a spot up in the balcony, which gave me a good vantage point over to the side – where I would not be blocking anyone – so I could take some photos.  I took video too, but I’m still working on it, and I wanted to post some pictures to the blog before leaving for Chicago this weekend.  At the very least, you can see my husband’s phone video (link below) to get the idea.  It was really cool to see our little Lucy out there, singing and doing the motions… but I have to admit, the most memorable part of my whole evening was after her class was done, when some of the kids were in the lobby area.  Parents were having kids stand next to Christmas trees for pictures, and she saw one of her favorite friends, they hugged and giggled and chased each other around in their little fancy Christmas dresses… it was adorable.

[Sorry this post does not feature professional quality photography.  I really didn't go into it with the mentality of capturing it that way, I just brought my camera along like any other parent would.  The only difference was my camera weighs more and I was able to use a great lens to photograph my little girl from waaaay far away.  It was like watching through binoculars!].

On with the show!  The Pre-K and Kindergarteners were the first ones up, singing “Christmas Jubilation” (this song is in my head a lot lately, and even Henry sings it all the time).  Let’s see if you can find Lucy!

This is one of Lucy’s classmates, who had a solo during “Oh Come, Little Children”)… and she did so well!  I can’t imagine being a young 5 year old standing there with a mic, in front of that many people!  I think on the video, you can hear the audience audibly sigh “awww” when she finishes her part.  Cute overload.

We WISH you a Merry Christmas!  We WISH you a Merry Christmas!….

So, we’re in the lobby and we’re taking photos by Christmas trees (When in Rome)!  Brother Henry steps in.  He’s usually so cute and agreeable about photos.  Take your finger away from your nose, sweetie.;)
Oh yeah.  Tree photo!  I could’ve used a flash for those awful shadows!  Hahahaha!
Taking pictures of a dancing child, in a dark living room, with no flash.  I was lucky to get a cute smile.  This was later in the evening, after her show, and after dessert at the Rainbow Grill.
Here she is generally messing around, as well as doing one of her songs…
Here is the YouTube video of the whole Pre-K / K portion, my husband shot on his iPhone.

Christmastime is here, and I plan on posting more holiday cheer and winter scenery on the blog… hope you don’t mind!  Have a lovely weekend!

Mila & Sasha

A little while ago, we went to visit our good friends Eric and Jen, and also planned a little photo session for their dogs, Mila and Sasha.  Eric and Jen have been on the blog before, for our Spring Break trip to Baltimore and Washington, DC!  They’re the friends we randomly call on the phone during the week, just to chat.  They’re the friends who will always be standing next to us to watch the ball drop on New Year’s Eve.  They’re the friends who we can argue with, laugh with, and support through life’s big ups and downs.  Photographing them with their dogs was something I wanted to do for a while, but we could never find a good time to line up our schedules, until this fall.  We brought the kids along, and although it was pretty chilly outside, we had a good time wandering around in their back yard and back field, trying to get pictures of their “kids”.  Mila and Sasha are so incredibly loved (Jen might say spoiled), and very well-behaved and sweet. They have had their dogs for as long as I’ve known them (although Ron has known them since before they were married, back in their college days). When Lucy was just a few months old, she laughed her first real laughs while watching Mila and Sasha checking her out through the mesh sides of her playpen. It was priceless!  Now when we go over there, the kids love to play with the dogs…. well, Henry is still warming up to them a bit (and he calls Mila “Squirt”, one of her nicknames).   I’m glad we finally were able to make this little session happen, and I’m glad that now they will always have pictures that show the dogs’ personalities – and they have great personalities!  To Eric and Jen, Mila and Sasha are far more than just pets, they are like their children… so we love them too.

Thankful

It’s the holiday season!  It’s the culmination of the year, a time of gatherings and reflections.  A time for honoring traditions and celebrating new joys with family and friends.  This time of year, we celebrate Thanksgiving on Sunday with a dinner at my grandma and grandpa’s house, then Thursday we go back in the evening for our odd tradition: BINGO.  It’s silly, but we’ve been doing it since the grandkids were little, and by the time the youngest grandchild was outgrowing it, the great-grandchildren started coming along.  Heck, I think we’d do it regardless of how old we all are.  It’s pretty special for everyone to get together, considering that now there are about 35 people who fill my grandparents’ little house in Grandville, the home they built, where they raised their five kids and had a hand in raising ten grandchildren.  It’s a place of warmth, casual comfort, memories and liveliness.  I wanted to capture the feeling of this home, because it’s unlike anywhere else in the world for me, and I know that someday, perhaps many years from now, it will belong to someone else.  But it will always be Grandma and Grandpa’s house (and I might actually be sad to see that wood paneling and shag carpet get torn out).

Here is a photo of me when I was a kid (my grandma and mom sitting next to me), sitting in the same basement.  See, it really hasn’t changed much.  I’m surrounded by the holiday decor my grandma put out, and this is clearly a Christmas party, back when there were so “few” of us that we ate dinner in the basement and could open presents upstairs in their living room.  Now the basement is a giant ring of folding chairs on Christmas night!  Look how happy I am, about to eat that brownie.  Look at my mom’s hair!  The 80′s were awesome.  I shall refrain from scanning numerous other photos and adding them to this post!

A photo of my mom and her siblings when they were kids in the 1960′s.  My mom is on the far left.
My cousins strung these lights several years ago, and they never came down.  No one is complaining.;)
My grandma truly does have a flair for festivity.  I love how she decorates the tables during the holidays.   Yes that is a pool-table light.  One of the dining tables is a pool table covered by plywood.  The pool table isn’t moving, and people have to sit somewhere!
Grandma Myrt’s apple pie with pink sprinkles… no Thanksgiving party would be complete without it.
Many hours spent playing in this hallway, the bottom drawer on the left has been the “toy drawer” for forever, it still is…
Family photo on the left, back when there were just three grandchildren (my sister Kelly, me not smiling, and our cousin Ryan), hangs in the hallway off the living room. Our Henry on the right, playing with a very, very old toy train, we used to drag around the house when we were little (and my mom and aunts and uncles too)…
Yeah baby!
All the letter blocks are the first initials of the grandchildren, their significant others, and the great-grandchildren.  That big yellow M, that’s me…
My winning card, legit.
I’m so thankful for all the blessings in my life, especially my family.  When it all comes down to it, family is everything to me.  They are crazy, wonderful, strange, helpful, wise, hilarious, or just familiar… but I would be lost without this family.  For that matter, my wonderful in-laws as well, who we will be celebrating with on Saturday.  We have everything we need, what more could I ask for?  Happy Thanksgiving, and happy holidays!

Katie Terpstra - cool post, Mindy! priceless memories and you captured them well!

Lori Olcheske - Love the memories that you captured….I can so relate to many of the photos in my own family at grandmas house as well.

Jen Day - You have talked about your family’s traditional Bingo night before; glad to see the memories come to visual life for all to enjoy

Tyler | senior session

Back in October I met with Tyler and his mom in downtown Grand Rapids for his senior photos.  It was a beautiful fall Saturday, and there were lots of people wandering around the city.  Tyler is in the middle of his senior year at Hudsonville High School.  After just a short time, I could tell that he is truly the nicest guy, probably one of those people who everyone at school likes.  I’m thankful that I got to take his photos, capturing him at this stage of his life – about to take on the “real world”.  I know one thing, he will do great things, and he will make his family proud.  Tyler, best wishes for the remainder of your senior year, and in the future!  These were some of my favorites from our session:

Amy & Philip | 11.11.2011

Almost every little girl imagines one day becoming a princess.  Amy’s friends and family may joke that Amy still thinks she is a princess, which got me thinking… what is it about these stories that appeal to us, generation after generation, regardless of how the times change?  Why do millions of little girls want to be a princess at one time or another?  Those timeless stories we hear when we are little are all about the same basic things: facing fears, following your heart, and maybe in some cases, a little bit of magic.  We make wishes and we have dreams, and they take shape in our imaginations in ways that seem impossible at the time.  We realize later, however, that we don’t need castles or crowns for those dreams to come true.  Perhaps wanting to be like a princess actually is not a childish aspiration at all.  The princesses I know of (whether they are real, or exist only in a fairy tale) are all incredible women.  They are courageous, thoughtful, gentle, humble, determined, passionate, beautiful, and sensitive.  By this definition, yes, I think Amy is a princess… and the man that swept her off her feet, Philip, is an absolute gentleman.  He is kind, charming, and handsome, and he exudes a calmness that I know is good for Amy’s spirit.  I’m so glad that two such wonderful people have found each other, and it has been so nice to get to know them over the past few months. They are amazing match.

I loved being a part of this beautiful wedding day.  Lynell Shooks from Lizzie Photo was my assistant and second photographer, and I can’t thank her enough for all her help, and the gorgeous images she contributed!  Thank you, thank you, thank you!  Amy and Philip, I hope you enjoy this preview of your wedding photos as much as I enjoyed capturing your big day!  Before you even start to scroll down, please be warned: this blog post is a long one, I couldn’t resist going completely overboard (I never count images, but this post might be the longest one ever)… which I’m justifying because it’s the last wedding I’ll be blogging for a few months!  What a fabulous way to end my 2011 season.  Thank you again, and congratulations!

Once upon a time…

Too many dress photos?  I don’t think there is such a thing!  Sorry!
A rose in November… love.
This fur stole originally belonged to Amy’s great-grandmother, and then her grandma Alice owned it for many years.  It was just a happy coincidence that her last name started with the letter P…
Oh my word, Amy you are stunning!
Amy and Philip chose to have a romantic, candlelit ceremony.  I loved the atmosphere and feeling it created in the church.
The ceremony was officiated by Amy’s brother Ross.

… and they lived happily ever after!
